If you want your house to stand out in your neighborhood or you want to give off the feeling that you are in control of things in general, use red on your windows and doors. Red draws attention, causes people to feel a little happier, and is a color that has been used on houses and other building for centuries.
Meanings of the Color Red
Red is often mistaken as being the color of love. This mistaken meaning is most likely because our culture has adopted red as the official color of Valentine’s Day and red roses as what you give the girl that you love. Love is actually represented by the color pink, not red. Instead, the color red means passion; which still makes it a valid Valentine’s color just not in the way people think.
In addition to being the color of the more powerful feeling of passion, red also elicits a feeling of respect and attention. This is why it is considered a “power color” and is worn by people who want to look in control and command attention.
On the softer side, red also means warmth and life; this is why the color red makes us feel excited and energizes us.
Global Use of Red on Buildings
Doors have been painted red for various reasons in locations all over the globe. In China, they paint their doors red for good luck. Here in America, doors are painted red as a warm greeting to welcome visitors into homes.
Churches across the world have red doors to represent their belief in the blood of Christ and that the inside of the church is holy ground. Similarly, in some countries they believe that painting your door red wards off bad spirits and ghosts from entering your home.
Red in Small Doses
Red is a strong color, and a little goes a long ways. This is why it is never recommended that you paint the outside of your house in red; and never, ever your windows, doors and house all together in red. While just the right amount of red can draw attention and make us feel welcomed in someone’s home, too much red can make us feel angry and irritated without knowing why. This causes us to feel agitated and irritated with the people around us for no reason.
So if you like the power color red, by all means use it. Just use it in small doses and restrict your use of it to just your windows and doors. Better yet, just use it on your front door.
