There is nothing wrong with doing some home improvement projects on you own without hiring a contractor or other professional to help you. Every homeowner should know how to be able to make repairs to their home whether they are emergency repairs or not, and also how to spruce up their home to make it look better.
But, there are just somethings that should be left alone for a professional to fix, and fixing a window is one of them.
Trying to Fix a Window Yourself is a Bad Idea
When we talk about fixing a window we aren’t talking about replacing a screw or a hinge, or repainting. We are talking about broken window panes, warping trim, and leaky seals.
Yes, you could buy the materials and attempt to make the repairs on your own. You have every right as a homeowner to do what you like to your windows.
But, have you ever done anything like this in the past? Are you relying on the assistance of a do-it-yourself manual or a YouTube video? Is YouTube or that manual going to guarantee the repair work and purchase the construction materials for you when you don’t complete the repair correctly the first time and you have to do it again?
If you have never made major repairs to your window before, you don’t have the experience or the knowledge that you need to properly fix the damage. Because not only is it the damage you can see that needs to be fixed, but you also need to make sure that window you are working on gets sealed properly. Without a proper seal, that window can leak both water and air where you made the repairs and actually make the situation worse than it was before you made the repairs.
Save Yourself Money and Hire a Professional
You may think that fixing the repairs on your own is the least expensive option, and it is if you get the damage fixed correctly the first time.
But for those that have never made major repairs to their windows you could be looking at several trips to the store and a whole lot of weekend time being spent on trying to fix something you don’t know how to fix. Also if you don’t fix it right and you can’t get a good seal on the window, the water that can get in through the window now can damage more of the window, the drywall, the carpets, the wall paint, and so much more. And then you will have to call in a professional to fix that damage anyway, and it will end up costing you a whole lot more than it would of to just have them fix the window in the first place.
Also, there are just some damaged windows that cannot be fixed, and you will be wasting your time and money trying to fix a window that actually needs to be completely replaced.
