Debunking the “Sears Catalogue Home” Myth

You may have heard about a certain house in Georgia where the windows were reportedly installed upside down. In this blog, Renewal by Andersen® of Louisville/Lexington shares a close look at this myth, and why working with legitimate replacement windows companies like us eliminates the chances of this happening to your own home.

The “Sears Catalogue Home”

Locals in historic Savannah, Georgia are perplexed by a peach-colored house that features bay windows protruding from the second story. When viewed from the curb, these windows appear to be installed upside-down. According to local myth, this “mishap” was the result of the homeowner (or window installer) buying a mail-order replacement window—purportedly through the Sears catalogue—and not reading the installation instructions.

There are certain verifiable facts that seem to support the myth. For instance, the “Sears Catalogue Home” is a real house located in Habersham Street. The homeowner has apparently been made aware of their home’s notoriety, and has since taken to hanging signs stating that, despite appearances, the windows are not upside down. The truth is, it only appears that way because the bay windows are made of three reversed single hung windows. The bottom halves are fixed like picture windows, while the top halves are operable, which allows hot air to vent out.
