Your Louisville window box did beautifully this summer with all of the flowers and plants that it grew to add color to the front of your home. Why not give it the time off that it deserves for the fall and winter, so that it is ready to go next spring for another season of beautiful flowers. But, just because you decide to give your Louisville window box some time off to rest for the fall and winter, it doesn’t mean that it has to be empty. You can still use this space for your fall decorations with items that don’t require any planting. The Outside of Your Louisville Window BoxWhen decorating a window box for a holiday, don’t forget that you can put things on the outside of the window box. It doesn’t all have to be on the inside. The outside of the box is a great place to put autumn bows, fall wreaths, or even leaf garland.Regardless of what you decide to do for the outside of the box, you want to do this part first. That way when you start putting things on the inside of your Louisville window box you will know where things can and cannot drape over the sides. The Inside Base of your Louisville Window BoxYou can always just start putting fall harvest items in your window box and call it good, but if you lay a base of items down first it will help in utilizing all of the space. It also helps to make the important pieces stick out, rather than letting them get buried by things that should be background décor. If you decide to go with a base first, always use fall leaves. You can use real leaves or fake leaves, it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you use a variety of different colors, and forms (loose leaves, sprigs of leaves, and leaf garland). The variety will add good color to your box, as well as different shapes. The Primary Decorations of your Louisville Window BoxThe primary decorations of your window box will be signature fall harvest items, like:

  • All different sizes of pumpkins
  • Different types and colors of gourds
  • Indian corn
  • Fake apples

Place these items on top of and in front of the leaves that are already in the box. This will make them the focus of your Louisville window box with a beautiful background of fall leaves.
