In the winter we get to see water in all of its different forms, from rain to snow and ice to fog. Unfortunately, this is also the time of year that we also see water in its many different forms on the inside of our windows, which is not good.

There are steps that you can take though, to help keep your windows dry and prevent the damage that is eventually caused by the water.Wet WindowsNormally in the winter you want to increase the amount of humidity in your home. The increased humidity helps to balance out how dry your heating source makes your home while it is working to make your home a comfortable temperature, compared to the cold outside. However, when there is too much moisture, water from the air starts to collect on your windows. You will see it in the form of water droplets on the glass that we also call condensation. Condensation every now and then is not a bad thing. But, when there is condensation constantly on your windows it can make the area around the glass, the frame, and the window sill wet; which can lead to water damage and molding. To prevent the condensation, you need to find the right balance of moisture for the air in your home. The perfect balance is where the air isn’t being dried out from your heating source, but is also not so saturated that it creates condensation on your windows.Foggy WindowsFoggy windows are also an issue with condensation, but this condensation is located between the panes of glass in your window. When your windows start to fog it means that the desiccant that normally absorbs all the condensation that forms in between the panes has become saturated and is no longer working. Desiccant cannot be replaced, so in this situation the best thing to do is to replace your old windows with new ones.Ice WindowsIce on the inside of your windows is a condensation problem that has escalated. In this case, the condensation that has collected on your window freezes because of how cold it is outside. To fix this problem, you need to control the moisture level in your home so that the condensation doesn’t collect in the first place. But, you also need to have your old windows replaced with better (preferably energy efficient) windows, because if your windows are freezing on the inside then they aren’t doing a very good job at keeping the cold out of your home.
