Protecting Your Window Screen From Animals

Animals can do quite the number on a window screen. They have the capability to scratch them, bend them or just break through them. While, we can’t prevent the behavior that leads to the damage of a window screen, we can prevent them from being able to even get at the screen or have a reason to damage it.Make Window Screens UnreachablePets, especially cats, like to sit near open windows. There are new sounds outside to listen to and they are just naturally drawn by the fresh air. They also like to sit as near to these windows as possible and even scratch at the window screen in an attempt to get out.If your cat has scratched through their share of window screens, it is time to make it harder for them to get to the screens at all. You can do this by removing anything they use to jump on to get to the window. If you have windows that can open from the bottom or the top, open the top, so they can’t get up to the screen. You can also place heavy, sturdy objects where they normally sit or lay next to the open window to prevent them from getting there or getting comfortable.Don’t Feed Wildlife Near Window ScreensOutside animals are a category all of their own when it comes to destroying items we own. When it comes to window screens though, there are not too many cases where a wild animal will destroy one without cause. Those causes are if an animal is trapped between a window and a screen (yes, it has happened) and if there is food on the other side of the screen. Now, the first one you can’t help. They seem to get stuck in that spot on their own and without you knowing until the damage has already been done. The good news is that this situation is pretty rare. The second situation, however, is a little more common. If you have the fortune of feeding wildlife never do it near your windows. This is very hard since that is the best place to view them. But, if there is no food there one day and they smell or think that there is food in your home, they will destroy your window screen to get to the food. The best thing to do is to feed wild animals away from the windows and further out in the yard. This way they won’t be going through your window screen for a meal.To learn more about the options available from Renewal by Andersen, schedule a free in-home consultation today.
