General Information

In the summer of 2013, Second Presbyterian Church installed a new large HVAC system that was specifically sized for the educational wing of the church. The HVAC system was chosen because of its flexibility and zoning capability. As part of a major renovation project, one of the goals was to eliminate many inefficient AC window units to enhance the energy efficiency and the appearance of the church. The second goal was economical, year round comfort. To ensure the new HVAC system was successful, the old metal windows needed to be replaced with new, energy efficient windows.Renewal by Andersen was chosen to furnish and install nearly 300 windows in various sizes and configurations. The church had several additions over the years with a variety of wood and steel windows dating from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. This gave Second Presbyterian an inconsistent appearance and poor thermal performance. Performance, appearance, and durability were three of the factors considered in choosing Renewal by Andersen.

Scope of Project

Renewal by Andersen furnished and installed nearly 300 double hung and specialty windows that maintained the architectural integrity of the church and provide high thermal performance. Project management was key on this job because of its complexity. Special bucks and spread mulls were required for many of the openings. Because of the plaster returns on the steel windows, extreme care was required in their removal to avoid plaster damage. A large composite window on the rear elevation of the church consisted of stacked picture windows topped with Gothic windows. Renewal by Andersen made special templates to assure a perfect fit.Installation capacity was balanced with the delivery schedule and coordinated with other contractors on the job site. Logistics in the removal and installation of windows on three different levels made the project even more of a challenge. Onsite project management along with Renewal’s own factory trained technicians allowed the project to be completed on time and within budget.

Why they chose Renewal by Andersen

before-afterE

For over 100 years, Andersen has been manufacturing quality windows and doors. Renewal is the division of Andersen strictly for the replacement market. In addition to producing a quality product that will perform and maintain a facility’s architectural integrity, it must be installed properly. To assure meeting the building owner’s expectations, prototype windows were installed for final approval. This allowed for final sign off on: color, installation technique, grille pattern, insulation and caulking. Managing expectations is critical on a complex, commercial project. A daily and weekly installation schedule was provided along with a post installation walk through
