Should I Change My Window Style Before Selling My Home?

Changing your window style before you sell your home is something that you will want to talk to your agent about before you do. As to whether or not a change like this will increase the value of your home will depend on what your home looks like already and what people in the market are currently looking for. Most of all you need to consider if any change you make will actually increase the value of your home more than what you are going to pay to have the change made. Will a New Window Style Make the House Look Better? If you live in an older model home where the windows were updated to look more modern, you may want to consider changing them to a style that is more fitting to the style of the home. The window styles today give homeowners all of the modern conveniences and energy efficiencies they need, while at the same time looking old-style to fit the look of older homes.Again, whether or not you should make this change depends specifically on your home. For example, if your home was built in the 1970’s and has modern windows, a change to a style that is similar to what the home originally had will not make a difference. However, a home built in 1910 would greatly benefit from windows that match the style and architecture of that period. Will a New Window Style Increase the Value of the Home?Always talk to your real estate agent before you make drastic changes to the style of your home. They will be able to go over with you what you should list your home for before and after the change. Then you will be able to determine if the cost of changing the style of your home is more or less than the difference in the listing prices. Can You Make Other Changes Other Than Changing Window Style?Aside from changing the style of your windows, there are other changes you can make to increase the value of your home. Changes like:

  • Changing to energy-efficient windows
  • Upgrading to double-pane windows if you only have single-pane ones
  • Changing from old, rotten wood frames to new vinyl frames
  • Putting a window in to see a great view that is being blocked by a wall

No matter what changes you decide to make though, if you are selling your home, always check to make sure that you can recover the amount of the change in the selling price. This may mean not changing the style of your windows, but making other changes instead.Renewal by Andersen is available to answer any questions you may have about replacing your windows and doors.
