One of the biggest reasons homeowners upgrade their windows is for energy efficiency. Whether you’re in the market for living room picture windows or some kitchen casement windows, choosing products with high energy efficiency ratings should always be top priority. Unfortunately, for many homeowners, this is easier said than done. With all the numerous technical information, terms, and features, it can be a little challenging to find the right windows that meet your needs.

Luckily, there are ways to help make the process of shopping for energy-efficient windows that much easier. Here are a few tips from our experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Louisville/Lexington on how to understand and find the best window solution for your home.

Look for Double-Pane Windows

In single-pane windows, the pane consists of a single sheet of glass. Double-pane windows, therefore, consist of two sheets of glass separated by a layer of insulating gas. In many cases, double-pane windows offer better energy efficiency than their single-pane counterparts, mainly because of its insulating layer. There are also triple pane windows available, but their efficiency is not much better than double-panes. Regardless, always consult with a professional to find a product that will work best for your home.

Coats and Glazing

Renewal by Andersen replacement windows also come standard with a Low-E coat. Low-E stands for low emissivity. In simple terms, it’s a coat that protects your windows from ultraviolet radiation which also cuts how much of the sun’s heat is transmitted through the glass. Low-E coats are available in different levels and can be customized depending on your needs.

R-Values Versus U-Values

From simple double-hung windows to space-saving sliding windows, you’ll find R-values and U-values thrown around a lot when describing windows. Both pertain to insulation abilities but U-values are more commonly used for replacement windows. The lower the U-value (or higher R-value) is, the better your window will be at keeping the heat out of your home.
