Understanding Full-Frame vs. Insert Window Replacement Methods

Not many people know that there are two ways to replace windows: the full-frame and insert methods. In this blog, replacement windows and patio doors company Renewal by Andersen® of Louisville/Lexington shares an overview of these two replacement methods, and the conditions that favor one over the other.

Full-Frame vs. Insert Window Replacement

The choice between full-frame and insert window replacement depends on the condition of the window frame. During our initial consultations with homeowners, we inspect the condition of the existing windows, including the window frame. If the frames are not warped, moisture-damaged and are generally in good shape, we recommend insert window replacement. With this method, only the sashes and trim are removed and replaced, while the frame stays in place. This method is faster, costs less and—thanks to our precise manufacturing methods—can dramatically improve window energy efficiency.

Most homeowners are familiar with the full-frame method. Here, the complete window assemblies are removed and replaced. This is done when the existing window frames are simply unsuitable for retention. The frame may be warped or damaged beyond repair. In many cases, moisture-damaged frames also have similarly-damaged wall openings. A full-frame replacement allows replacement window contractors like us to address such problems. The same logic applies when installing replacement doors.
