One concern some have about low-E window glass is that it can allegedly cause damage to neighboring properties. In this blog, replacement doors and windows company Renewal by Andersen® of Louisville/Lexington takes an in-depth look at this concern.
What Is Low-E Glass?
Low-emissivity glass, or low-E glass, is a type of window glass with one side featuring a microscopic metallic oxide coating that selectively reflects unwanted parts of sunlight, such as UV rays and solar heat, while allowing visible light through. This reduces the heat that comes from direct sunlight, which helps reduce indoor cooling requirements when it’s hot outside. It also helps reduce the harmful effects of UV rays, such as faded indoor furnishings.
Low-E Glass and Neighboring Properties
There have been reports of low-E glass on windows or patio doors causing distortion on neighboring properties’ vinyl siding from distances as far as 20 feet. Other reported signs of low-E related damage include melted garbage bags, vehicle plastic parts and house wraps on ongoing exterior installations. It should be noted that tinted windows, both on homes and on vehicles, cause the same thing, but such damage is rarely reported.
It is highly unlikely that your low-E windows will damage neighboring property; however, it doesn’t hurt to take precautions. It’s important to note that if reflected sunlight from a low-E window is what actually caused the damage, then there must be a clear line of sight between your window and the neighboring property. Planting bushes or trees in your yard can help reduce reflected light. Tall fences, if allowed by local building codes and association rules, offer the same benefit.
Siding manufacturers have also been offering products that have higher heat tolerances. These features are either applied as coatings or blended as additives into the vinyl or composite. Whereas traditional vinyl siding begins to warp and distort at around 170 degrees, these new siding products can withstand temperatures up to 225 degrees.
