Don’t be stuck with boring curtains when there are so many different alternatives that you can choose from. If you don’t like the selection the store has don’t settle, create your own. By using your imagination and non-traditional materials, you can have curtains that are a perfect match for your room’s décor.
Adding to Existing Window Curtains
If your current curtains do a great job and are still in good shape, but you want to jazz them up a little bit, add to them don’t replace them.
You can add to existing curtains easily with everyday items like scarves, ribbons, and decorative garland. What you use is up to you and the décor theme of the room the curtains are in. For example, if you have a country theme, you don’t want to use a string of faux diamonds to change the look of your curtains. Because the wrong materials may make your curtain look better, but it will make your room look less put together. For this particular theme, a gingham scarf being used as a tieback would incorporate your curtains as an important part of the theme to this type of décor in your room while at the same time improving the look of the curtains.
With adding these types of materials, the best place to use them is as tiebacks or draped over the top of the curtains at the curtain rod.
Altering Pre-Made Curtains
If you are a good seamstress, know a good seamstress, or just have an artistic touch then you can physically alter pre-made curtains to make the more into what you want them to look like. You can cut out blocks from the curtains and add lace, tuleing, or other delicate materials to change the look from boring to a little more elegant. These types of changes will also allow more light in the room even when the curtains are closed, thanks to the see-through nature of the added materials.
You can also sew on or iron on specially made materials that add character to match your room’s theme. For example, if you have a rose themed room you can iron on rose patches to the trim of the curtains. For a Coca-Cola themed kitchen, sew on or iron on Coco-Cola themed material or items to your curtains.
Creating Window Curtains from Out of Other Materials
Don’t think that the only curtains that you can use are the ones labeled as curtains. You can actually use many different materials as curtains, including bed sheets, table cloths, kitchen towels, and more. As long as you are able to make these materials look like curtains and are not just thumb tacking them above the window, you actually have an endless supply of materials to be able to use in creating unique curtains for your room.
So never settle for boring, even the busiest of us can make simple alterations to enhance the look of our window curtains.
