One of the most overlooked pieces of glass in the house when it comes to holiday decorations is the storm door. People will decorate their windows and even the mirrors in their home for the holidays and completely forget that they could decorate the glass in their storm door.
In fact, most home homeowners complain that the storm door gets in the way of the wreaths that they want to hang on their front door. So for all of you homeowners out there that have storm doors, here are some ways to incorporate your storm door in your holiday decorating and not think of it as an obstacle.
Decorate the Storm Door Glass
You can do anything to the glass in your storm doors that you can do to your windows. You can tape snowflakes up, you can paint them, and you can put snow on them. Here are some tips for painting and putting snow on your storm door:
- Cover anything that is not glass before spraying snow on your storm door.
- Lay down a cloth on the cement before you spray snow or start painting your storm door to keep messes from becoming permanent.
- If you want to add the illusion of depth, create part of the scene on the inside and part of it on the outside. For example, on the inside of the storm door you can create a snowman or a cabin on a snowy hill, then on the outside use the spray-on snow to give the snow texture and make it look closer.
Hang Decorations on Your Storm Door
Most people don’t think about this, but you can hang Christmas decorations from your storm door just like you do on your front door. It just takes a little extra effort to get the decorations up and to get them to stay.
You can use clear tape for the lighter items, but for the heavier decorations use things like suction cup hooks that you can stick to the glass. Other than the suction cup hooks, there are also other hooks that you can stick to the glass that will easily release at the end of the season. When you go to the store take a look at all of the hooks available and choose the ones that will work best for your door and what you are hanging up.
The nice thing about these types of hooks is that they won’t damage your glass and you can use the to hang heavier things like wreaths, swags, lights, stockings, ornaments, or anything else that you had in mind to decorate you front door with.
