Evaluating Handiwork: Signs of Shoddy Window Installation

If you’re planning on hiring the window contractor you previously worked, you might want to look at their handiwork first. The window installation experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Louisville/Lexington list below the signs of shoddy installation work you should look for.

Gaps in Your Windows

Keep in mind that shoddy installation work might not be the only culprit here. Either the contractor didn’t take the correct measurements or the window frame was simply a bad fit for your home. If there’s a gap between the frame and the sill, the frame might have been too big for the glass pane. The only way to make sure your window will be a great fit for your home is to customize it.

Drafts

Don’t forget that some gaps are barely noticeable. To make sure you don’t miss any gaps, check if parts of your home are colder than others. Gaps can let in drafts, which can in turn raise your heating and cooling costs.

Water Damage

Rainwater can also infiltrate your window through these gaps—keep an eye out for signs of water damage, like peeling paint, water stains, and mold.

Uneven Caulking

However, just because there are no gaps doesn’t mean your windows were installed properly. Caulk, which is applied to the sides of your windows to keep water out of your interior, is supposed to be smooth and even. However, if the contractor rushed the process, the caulking will look messy.
