Helpful Tips for Cleaning High Windows

Dirty windows can reduce the natural light that enters your home, which can make your living spaces dark and gloomy. However, cleaning high windows is no easy task. It requires using a ladder and choosing the perfect weather to accomplish the task.

Your trusted window installation expert shares some tips for cleaning high windows.

Schedule It Right

You can just decide to clean high windows on a random day, but it should be planned. Streaks can happen when you wash your windows on a sunny day. The cleaner will evaporate quickly if the glass is making the surface warm. Streaks will form if you weren’t able to wipe it fast enough, which you can’t remove by wiping.

Whether you’re cleaning double hung windows from the ground floor or your higher windows, you should schedule the task on a cloudy day. You want your windows to be crystal clear and not streaked. Choose a day when the temperature is not predicted to reach over 70 degrees and with no rain forecast.

Safe Access Method

You can either use a squeegee with a long handle or a ladder to reach high windows. However, in some cases, you’ll need to use both. Never attempt to clean your windows by standing in the interior and hanging out of the exterior. It can be dangerous if you need to stretch from the waist or below.

Be careful when leaning on the gutter because it may fall under your weight, which can be costly to replace. You can either use an extension ladder or a stepladder for cleaning windows. You’ll know your ladder is at a safe angle by standing with your toes touching the feet of the ladder and stretching out your arms.

Prep Your Supplies & Windows

Before starting with this chore, make sure that all your supplies are ready. Prepare two buckets, squeegees, large sponges, mild dishwashing detergent or white vinegar, rubber gloves, towels, and lint-free cloths.

High windows don’t get cleaned that frequently so expect to see a lot of dirt and grime. The exterior windows may have leaves, insects, and cobwebs. A hand-held vacuum cleaner will come in handy with removing dust and other debris. You can also use soft-bristled but you’ll need a small broom for the leaves and insects.
